Supervisor - Heavy Equipment Shop

Job Location: Thompson, Manitoba
Type: Permanent, Full Time
Report to: Maintenance Superintendent
Job Summary: Provides direct leadership, technical oversight, and daily operational management of the Heavy Equipment Shop while maximizing equipment availability, maintaining quality repairs, and fostering a strong safety culture.

Responsibilities & Duties

  • Supervise, coordinate, and schedule the daily activities of shop mechanics, apprentices, and helpers.
  • Oversee the Shop Lead Hand by delegating work, estimating jobs, and tracking daily progress.
  • Implement and support the structured mentorship program for apprentices.
  • Partner with the Maintenance Superintendent to establish daily maintenance priorities and production goals.
  • Coordinate repair schedules with field operations to minimize equipment downtime.
  • Identify workflow bottlenecks and implement productivity improvements.
  • Review and approve material requisitions and major parts purchases.
  • Maintain accurate personnel, work order, and maintenance records.
  • Ensure compliance with lockout/tagout (LOTO), fall protection, rigging, and other safe work practices.
  • Review daily Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) with shop personnel.
  • Recommend improvements to shop productivity, repair methods, and equipment performance.
  • Participate in hiring, promotions, transfers, and other personnel decisions.
  • Attend supervisor meetings.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements, Education, Skills, Knowledge, & Abilities

  • Minimum 5 years of progressive leadership experience supervising an industrial or civil maintenance shop.
  • Journeyperson Heavy Duty Mechanic certification or equivalent experience.
  • Passion for mentoring and developing apprentice mechanics.
  • Occupational health and safety training is considered an asset.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Ability to work well with others.
  • Strong leadership, planning, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to solve problems, think critically, and make decisions.
  • Good math skills.
  • Willingness to learn.

Working Conditions

Approximately 90% office and shop environment and 10% field work within the Thompson area.

Job Summary: Operate heavy truck and trailer to transport goods and machinery over various routes and terrains to specified locations.

  • Perform pre-trip inspections of trucks, trailers, and transport equipment, reporting any defects or damage.
  • Check and replenish fluids while maintaining a clean truck and trailer.
  • Perform routine maintenance and lubrication of trucks and trailers.

  • Safely load, unload, and operate a variety of heavy equipment.
  • Properly secure loads in compliance with transportation and safety regulations.
